Why is my alkalinity dropping?
Short answer: in a reef tank, alkalinity almost always drops because your corals and coralline algae are consuming it — they pull alkalinity and calcium out of the water to build their skeletons. A slow, steady decline between doses is normal and expected. It's only a problem when the drop is faster than usual, speeding up, or your dosing can't keep up. And the part that confuses everyone: your calcium can look perfectly stable while this happens. That's chemistry, not a contradiction. Here's why — and what to check.
A steady drop is normal
Alkalinity is consumed continuously as coral grows. There is no single "normal" rate — it scales with how much coral you keep and how fast it grows. A lightly stocked tank might use a few tenths of a dKH per day; a heavy SPS system can use several times that. What matters is not the number, it's that consumption is steady and your dosing replaces what's used. A tank that drifts down a little between doses and gets topped back up is healthy. Chasing every small wobble does more harm than the wobble does.
Why calcium looks stable while alkalinity falls
This is the most misunderstood thing in reef chemistry — and it stops being a mystery the moment you see the numbers.
Calcium and alkalinity are consumed together when coral calcifies, in a near-fixed ratio: about 7.1 ppm of calcium for every 1 dKH of alkalinity. But your water holds far more calcium to begin with — around 420 ppm — than alkalinity. So the same calcification that visibly drops your alkalinity barely moves your calcium.
Work it through: if alkalinity falls 2 dKH, calcium falls only about 14 ppm — say, 430 down to 416. That's inside the error bar of most hobby calcium kits. Your calcium reads "stable" not because nothing happened, but because the change is too small for the kit to see. Alkalinity, which moves faster and is measured more precisely, shows the same event clearly.

The common reasons alkalinity drops faster than you expect
- Growing coral load. More coral, or faster growth, means more consumption. A rate that creeps up over weeks usually just means your corals are thriving — dose more, don't panic.
- Your dose fell behind. If consumption rose and your daily dose didn't, alkalinity drifts down even while you're "dosing." Match the dose to the measured consumption rather than chasing it back up in one big correction.
- Water changes. If your salt mixes up lower in alkalinity than your tank, every water change dilutes it down. Test your fresh saltwater.
- Precipitation. Dosing calcium and alkalinity at the same time or in the same spot — or running pH very high — can precipitate calcium carbonate out of solution, stripping both parameters at once (the "snowstorm"). Dose them apart.
- Low magnesium. Magnesium is what lets your tank hold calcium and alkalinity in solution. When it's low, they won't stay up no matter how much you dose. Check magnesium first.
- Test-kit error. Titration kits are read by eye and can vary a couple of tenths of a dKH between tests. One low reading is not a trend — retest before acting.
The one actually worth worrying about
If your calcium drops noticeably faster than alkalinity — more than that ~7.1-per-1 ratio explains — something is off: precipitation, a bad test kit, or a salt-mix problem, not ordinary calcification. That's the case to investigate. (Reef Stability watches this ratio and flags it for you.)
